Today, a petition to amend the Ontario Liberal Party’s constitution was delivered electronically to the  Executive Director and the President of the Ontario Liberal Party, with the required signatures of twenty or more sponsoring Liberals from three or more electoral districts, jointly, in accordance with section 16.5(f) of the constitution.

The proposed amendment, if passed, will change the definition of Member in Section 3.1, ensuring that only Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents, and persons with Status under the Indian Act are eligible to be Members of the Ontario Liberal Party, and therefore vote in nomination or leadership contests.

This amendment would bring the Ontario Liberal Party’s constitution in line with the Liberal Party of Canada’s constitution, which was recently amended at the Biennial Convention in Montreal. It would also implement one of the most important recommendations by Hon. Marie-Josée Hogue, in her findings from the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions (a.k.a Hogue Inquiry). Specifically, Recommendation 31.

We will continue to organize to ensure this amendment is brought forward at the Annual Meeting.
